You'll find there are a variety of online resources about the island listing endless places to eat, but The Honeycombers.com site always provides the best options.

I consider myself a Foodie, and I love eating good food, but hey, even though I’m on vacation, I don't want to spend all my money on fancy restaurants and cafes every day. I also don’t want to spend too much time in traffic going to all these terrific places. The traffic in Bali (Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, and more) is awful, especially in the morning and late afternoon when we all want to experience the sunset from a beach club view. To have a stress-free vacation, I have found three places I’m usually staying at in Legian. They're so close to the beach or gym that I can walk to them.

As I mentioned earlier, Bali is heaven for Foodies, where you can find so many options. Just google 'Foodie Bali,' and you’ll be busy reading for the next 24 hours! Going to a restaurant is always a risk for us Celiacs in regards to cross-contamination, but I have never had any issues at the places listed below. Remember this tip: you are in a different part of the world where food allergies and other food-related diseases are less common, and the knowledge about these issues are probably less known than what you are used to in your own country. Use your common sense and evaluate the risk you are willing to take. Be prepared. Also, learn the meaning of the 'Bali Belly,' meaning you might find yourself needing a toilet within 30-seconds after eating something you probably shouldn't have eaten. I have never personally experienced the 'Bali Belly,' but that could be because I take the Dukoal Vaccine every year.

Capil Beach Bar and Grill

Capil is on the beach, just across the street the from Double-Six hotel in Seminyak. This restaurant is very popular among Australian tourists, and sometimes you might have to wait a little longer for the food, but it’s all worth it.

Type: Casual restaurant
Price range: low
Food type: Homemade Thai food.
Region: Legian

Watercress Restaurant

Watercress is one of my favorite western cafes in Bali. Gluten-free in Bali, Indonesia

by Ole Christen

If you have food allergies, you will find that Bali is a kind of foodie heaven! There are restaurants and cafes with amazing menus popping up every day! There are so many food establishments in open and close rotation that I never know if my favorite place is still open until I arrive on the island. Don't let this detour you from visiting Bali though! Bali is quite a large island, and there are several favorite spots where most of the tourists stay. Seminyak, Canggu, Legian, Kuta, Ubud are popular areas, to name a few.

Every time I visit Bali, the first thing I do is log in to the very informative website, The Honeycombers.com where I can try to catch up on what’s new, what's in, and what's out. Bali is such a popular destination.

It’s a great place to have something to drink or lunch. I always have lunch here when I’m at the beach. They don’t have gluten-free labeled items on their menu, but as soon as I show them my Gluten-free Restaurant Card, they inform me of all my meal options. When you ask the proper questions, very often the head waiter will come out to the table and give you suggestions on what to eat, and what they can substitute. The Capil staff brings out the beach beds for sunset cocktails at 4 pm.

Type: beach cafe
Price range: Low
Region: Kuta, Double Six beach
Food type: Breakfast, lunch, snacks, western food, sunset bar

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is close to the beach in Legian. This place is my absolute favorite restaurant in regards to service, price, gluten-free menu options, and the freshness of their dishes. I could eat here every day and sometimes I do when I’m lazy. At Lemongrass, customers get greeted with big smiles, and the staff makes everyone feel welcome. Every time I’ve sat down at my table in previous years, they have asked me if I have any food allergies. Now they know me so well, so I don’t have to tell them. Gluten-free menu options are listed on their menu, as well as all of their vegetarian options. Their rustic curries are fantastic and made fresh every single day. Some might find the colors of the curries a little 'blah,' but it’s because there is no food coloring added. Their curries are how real curries should look like, not those of a neon green substance. Mmmmmm…. Spicy and creamy and to-die-for. I also must mention their amazing Beef Salad and their Spicy Chicken Larb. Sometimes I want western food, so I order their Sirloin Steak, which is incredible! It is tender and delicious! This restaurant is very popular among Australian tourists, and sometimes you might have to wait a little longer for the food, but it’s all worth it.

The perfect place for recharging the batteries, I love going to Watercress after a hard workout. Free range chicken, sustainably harvested prawns, and lobsters, vegetables washed with filtered water, you name it, they always provide excellent quality. They also have a superb wine selection, so be sure to ask for their recommendations.
