Osteria dei Borghi, Alba Italy

by Sheila Madge

Osteria dei Borghi is a delightful restaurant found within the historical city centre of Alba, Italy. Alba is a picturesque town in the heart of the Piedmont region, most famous for its white truffles and wine production. It is also home to the Ferraro (Nutella) headquarters, which seemed to add an extra subtle sweet smell to the air while wandering the streets of this beautiful town.

Osteria dei Borghi had one sign on the main pedestrian thoroughfare that advertised itself as a restaurant that specialized in traditional Piedmontese food. This intrigued me as I had no idea what was traditional to this area, and felt that if I wanted to experience the best food, I should stick with a restaurant that specialized in locally-grown sourced products. Was I ever happy we took and chance and walked down the side street to this amazing Osteria.

Arriving at the restaurant, I quickly asked if there were any gluten-free options on the menu and showed them my GF travel card hoping to alleviate any confusion from the start. They responded very quickly, pointing out that most of their items on the menu were naturally gluten-free and others could easily be adjusted to be as well. We sat at an outdoor table and quickly began scanning the menu. While deciding on our meals, our server came with a complimentary cheese and sausage plate. She quickly pointed out that she had confirmed with the chef and kitchen staff that the sausage (and cheese) was gluten-free and safe for me to eat. She also apologized that they did not have any gluten-free bread to go with it, but I did not miss it.

For our antipasti, we shared an order of Insalata Caprese, which consisted of fresh tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella. It was delicious and seasoned perfectly.

Up next was our first course. My husband eats gluten-free as well so I can have the option of experiencing two different menu choices. He opted for the Risotto Al Formaggi, and I had the pasta with a local style ragu sauce. Both of these choices showcased the local ingredients used to complete the dishes.

One thing that always gives me comfort when ordering pasta at a restaurant is when they mention the extra time needed to bring a separate pot of water to boil for my gluten-free pasta. I am just so happy that they understood cross-contamination.

They had a couple of choices on the dessert menu that are naturally gluten-free, such as the Panna Cotta, Creme Caramel, and fresh fruit, but we were too full and opted to share a glass of a local digestive to end off a fantastic meal. I may have initially visited Alba for the wine, but the food stole my heart! Until next time!
