Terraces Restaurant in the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

by Chiara-Rose Kemp

Terraces Restaurant has a light-filled, vibrant and modern dining room that looks out over a tranquil water feature, tropical palms and the blue skies of the Gold Coast through the floor to ceiling windows that run the length of the resort. An indoor waterfall also adds to the ambiance while you dine.

As they are located in a resort, they offer breakfast, lunch and dinner options. You do not need to be staying at the resort to dine at Terraces. Terraces Restaurant has many gluten-free items on their menu. However, if I wanted something in particular that wasn’t listed as gluten-free, the chefs did their best to accommodate.

All of the wait staff were kind and knowledgeable however I was often lucky enough to speak to the chefs directly when placing my order. I have been fortunate enough to stay at The Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort a number of times, and last time I was going I emailed the chefs ahead of time, so they were aware of my visit. When I got to our room, there was a note from one of the chefs next to a plate of Gluten Free Biscuits saying “Eat me. I’m Gluten Free. Please Enjoy.” This personal touch really highlights the lengths the staff at Terraces go to accommodate and make me feel welcome and at ease.

Terraces Restaurant is aware of cross-contamination. They offer a buffet for breakfast as well as a fantastic Seafood buffet which they told me all the gluten-free items, and if I did not feel comfortable due to the possibility of cross-contamination risks, they would prepare me dishes separately in the kitchen.

The dish cost is fair edging to expensive. As for recommendations I enjoyed pancakes, fruit platters, gluten-free club sandwich, pasta and fish and chips. Every meal I had was delicious! No complaints from my family either when it came to their meals. The food and experience reminded me of dining out, before diagnosis.

Terraces Restaurant has a wide variety of options to choose from for every meal, breakfast to dinner. For breakfast, there was everything from eggs through to pancakes and fresh fruit platters. The pancakes were fluffy and delicate, accompanied by strawberries and gluten-free maple syrup. The fruit platters came out with a variety of seasonal fruit (I had pineapple, rockmelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, watermelon, passionfruit, and kiwi fruit). With a twist on eggs on toast, the fried eggs came out on top of home-made hash browns that were golden and crisp on the outside but still nice and soft inside.

For lunch and dinner, the options were equally varied and delicious. I tried a Chicken Fried Rice that was nutritious, filling and full of flavour. Whenever I had it, the pasta was always cooked to perfection, and I was able to have it with a variety of sauces including a rich, tomato-based sauce mixed through with vegetables, as well as creamy seafood sauce. I had a gluten-free margarita pizza topped with rocket (arugula) that reminded me of the gluten-free pizza I’ve had in Italy with its thin base and taste. The gluten-free club sandwich was one of my favorites as I usually don’t get to have it. Who would have thought a simple sandwich would make me so happy? It was filled with flavour and accompanied by coeliac safe chips. Chips were also added to the classic Australian ‘Fish n’ Chips’ along with a gluten-free tartare sauce. The salads were a leafy avocado salad with a lemon dressing, and the other was a lovely mix of beans, peas, asparagus, potato, mushroom, and rosemary.

We ate at Terraces Restaurant many times while on our holiday, and we enjoyed every one of the meals. The chefs went out of their way to make sure that I was comfortable at all times and the experience was a joyous one!
