4 Tips to Handle Holiday Parties When Gluten-free

by Heather DiBiasi, MS RDN

Being gluten-free can feel overwhelming, especially during a time of the year where it seems like the parties are non-stop and there are gluten options everywhere you turn. Here are some tips on how to navigate those holiday parties a little easier when following a gluten-free diet.

Bring a dish

Don’t expect there to be gluten-free options. Bring something so you know you will have a gluten-free food option to eat! This is also a great way to show off your gluten-free cooking skills ;)

Use gluten-free substitutes when baking

Desserts are the most enticing part of the holiday season and sometimes it may be harder to find gluten-free alternatives. Luckily, there are a lot of gluten-free options available to purchase at the supermarket that you can use for baking. Swapping all-purpose flour for gluten-free alternatives like almond flour will not only help you avoid the gluten, but it gives your dessert an extra protein and fiber boost! Check out Chef Lori Miller's recipe for Pecan Praline Macaroons

Eat before you go

If you eat before the holiday party, you will feel fueled and satisfied when you arrive. This will make you much less likely to slip up and eat a source of gluten because you are starving and didn't double check the ingredients! Check out my recipe for Almond Crusted Chicken Tenders!

Enjoy the party

The party is not all about the food. Enjoy talking and spending time with the people you are with. Just because you are not eating gluten doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun!
