5 Hot Tips for a Healthy Summer

by Heather DiBiasi, MS RDN

Summertime is right around the corner, and this is typically the time of year people want to look and feel their best. We start the day off with good intentions- yet all the events that come up certainly make sticking to our healthy lifestyle much more difficult. Whether you’re lounging at the pool, reconnecting with friends, or hitting up a barbecue on a beautiful sunny day, keep these tips in mind to stay your healthiest self, all summer long.

1). Drink up! And sorry but I am not talking about the margaritas. Make sure you’re consuming plenty of water throughout the day. Since the sun is out and we are typically moving around more often, staying hydrated is extremely important to prevent dehydration. Also, the part of our brain that tells us we are hungry is adjacent to the part of our brain that tells us we are thirsty. Drinking lots of water will prevent you from mistaking your thirst for hunger. To spice things up add fruit to your water or try sparkling flavored seltzers.

2).  Now we can talk about the margaritas! Summer seems to be the most popular time of the year when it comes to alcohol consumption. And it’s ok to enjoy a drink every now and again. One rule of thumb is to have a glass of water after every alcoholic beverage. Drinking water will help you stay hydrated and energized. Be sure to watch out for too much sugar in your drink. Excess sugar will most likely wind up leaving you with uncontrollable cravings for more sugary foods and a crazy hangover- and I don’t think anyone wants that! If you really want a specialty drink that you know is heavy on the sugar, stick to having one. After that drink, have a tall glass of water and if you go for something else try vodka, seltzer with lime, or another low-sugar beverage.

3).  This one is going to sound obvious but eat your veggies! I know, I know, You’ve heard this before. Nonetheless, this one is essential and probably the best thing you can do for yourself during the summer and all year around. Think of veggies as your power foods. They’re loaded with water and fiber to keep you full and hydrated. Make sure to eat the rainbow since each different color has different powers, aka antioxidants. These antioxidants will fight off free radicals from inflammation in the body.

4). Get active! Summer is the perfect time of year to do this. Have fun and switch things up. Maybe instead of going to the gym try a hike or bike ride with a friend. A few other ideas are to take a walk during lunch with co-workers, go for a run on the beach, play an outdoor sport or go for a swim- whatever floats your boat!! Just make an effort to move at least 30 minutes each day.

Mocha Latte Pudding! A junk food alternative.

5). Be mindful. It’s not about chips at the table or the drink in your hand. It’s about making memories and enjoying yourself. Even if you drink a little more than usual or have a few treats here and there, focus on being in the moment and spending time with your friends and family. That is really what good summer vibes are all about!
