Japanese Musubi Wraps

Whether you know them as Onigiri or Musubi, these Japanese rolls are one of the easiest snack foods (or meals) to make while you’re traveling. So easy and you can even take most of the ingredients along with you in your suitcase! We also take a cutting board, plastic utensils, a small kitchen knife, and small plastic containers, to help make prep organized and effortless.

 

 

Most hotels or motels have in-room microwaves for you to prepare the one-minute rice and to mix the tuna. Fifteen minutes is all you need! When my husband and I have been off the grid, we’ve enjoyed a container of these after a long hike in the middle of nowhere. They're delicious and a good snack to eat after a few hours of adventure. We always have a Yeti ice chest and other cold storage bags, so these keep on ice for a few hours until ready to eat. 

 

The recipe makes 8-10 rolls

Ingredients

  • 1 package of large sheet Nori seaweed (I use SeaSnax 5-sheet pack and cut the sheets into half, making 10 sheets)
  • 2 containers of gluten-free sticky rice (I use Annie Chun's brand)
  • 2 tins of tuna, or any other toppings you desire (see topping ideas below)
  • 4 packets of mayo

How To

  1. Cut the large nori seaweed sheets into half. 
  2. Prepare rice and tuna with mayo.
  3. Spoon rice and tuna onto nori. Top with veggies and condiments of your choice. 

Most of these Musubi topping ideas can be found in local markets (in their deli's or salad bars) while traveling.

  • Canned BBQ jackfruit
  • Toasted cashews and almonds
  • Shredded Carrots or other veggies 
  • Avocado slices
  • Smoked salmon
