My Experience at Joi Cafe in Westlake Village, California

by Katie Barberi

After eight years of being gluten-free due to having Celiac Disease, it has become second nature for me to ask at restaurants for either a gluten-free menu or if they carry gluten-free bread, pasta, or pizza crust. At some point, the embarrassment that comes with asking the first few years goes away, and you know that it’s that or get sick so I will take the former. Walking into Joi Cafe was a completely different experience for me entirely. You walk up to the door, and it says right on the window “Gluten-Free,” and it is almost a sigh of relief knowing that you can eat ANYTHING in the whole restaurant. They serve everything from breakfast foods like pancakes to sandwiches to entree dishes, and all of it is gluten-free. Before you even enter the front door, you get the nice, comfortable, clean cafe feel with a bit of a modern, eco-friendly twist. The location isn’t huge by any means, but they make sure to make it feel like it is big and open and airy.

The menu while being gluten-free is also entirely plant-based. I have lived in the area for many years but have been hesitant to try Joi Cafe because of this. And let me say that I was pleasantly surprised when I got my food. I ordered the Fun Tuna Sandwich which is Garbanzo “tuna” on toasted white bread with tomato, avocado, and shredded beets. I also ordered the Cheesy Mac ‘N JOi (ns), baked white truffle quinoa macaroni and creamy cashew cheese layered with spinach and topped with seasoned and toasted breadcrumbs, served with a Caesar side salad, for my 15-month-old son. The downside to their menu; while they offer a great variety, they don’t have a kids menu, which is a bit of a downer since my son can’t finish a full-size entree dish or sandwich.

The food came out fairly quickly with the sandwich and salads coming out first. The salads were huge! Considering they are supposed to be side salads they were a good size which I loved. I hate going to restaurants and getting a tiny bowl of what they call a salad. When I took my first bite out of the sandwich, I immediately got concerned that the bread wasn’t gluten-free, because it was so good. I stopped one of the waitstaff and double checked, and she nicely told me that yes it was gluten-free. When I asked the owner about it later, she said that they get it locally from a vegan and gluten-free baker. My son loved the garbanzo tuna and ate as much of the sandwich as I did. The macaroni took a little longer to come out because the pasta takes a little longer to cook. That told me that they take the time to prepare each dish, which is a lovely quality in any restaurant. The macaroni blew my mind nearly as much as the sandwich bread. The cashew cheese was delicious, and it gives the dish such a great nutty flavor while still tasting like macaroni and cheese. And the breadcrumbs on top are a great addition. I also like that they sneak some spinach into the dish, which means that my son can happily eat the spinach along with the pasta.

After my experience at the Joi Cafe, they have changed my mind about plant-based foods and the fact that all of it is gluten-free is the best part. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, gluten-free or not, plant-based diet or not. It is one of those places that takes these two “special” diets and proves that it doesn’t have to be bland or boring. While I was eating, I overheard the owner, Joi, speaking with another patron and she said that her focus was to make a restaurant that didn’t have just the basic comfort foods but had everything that you could want for any meal, and I have to say she accomplished her goal.
