The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about cross contamination and helpful in highlighting GF options.

Fortnum & Mason Jubilee Tea Salon

It doesn’t get more quintessentially British than Afternoon Tea and what better place to enjoy it than the world-famous Fortnum & Mason? A short walk from Piccadilly Circus, Fortnums is a luxury British department store with an endless selection of jams and honey from around the world. The Jubilee Tea Salon was opened by HM The Queen in 2012, in celebration of her majesty’s sixty-year reign. The kitchen is extremely vigilant in preventing cross-contamination and offers a celiac-safe, gluten-free afternoon tea as well as a vegetarian version. From finger sandwiches to scones and patisserie, this traditional British feast never disappoints.

Tacos el Pastór

I discovered Tacos el Pastór on a recent trip to the Taste of London food festival. My Top 10 Gluten-free Spots in London

by Arianna Ambrogi

Below you will find my Top 10 Favorite Gluten-free Spots in London!

Niche

Niche is the ultimate go-to when craving British comfort food. Their motto; "Gluten-free but you wouldn’t know it,"perfectly describes their delicious menu. From traditional brunch options to fried chicken and drool-worthy desserts, Niche is Celiac heaven. Not only is the restaurant 100% gluten-free, it’s also accredited by Coeliac UK and offers several dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options. Based in Islington, the restaurant only seats 34 people, so booking in advance is highly recommended!

Honest Burgers

Who doesn’t love a juicy burger? Honest Burgers is a favourite amongst Celiac Londoners as they take dietary requirements extremely seriously. The entire menu is locally sourced and naturally gluten free except for the standard burger buns but fear not, their GF buns are amazing! Cross-contamination is avoided by ensuring all gluten-free burgers are prepared with different utensils on clean surfaces and toasted in dedicated toasters. They also have monthly burger specials (GF fried chicken burger anyone?!), and with 22 branches around greater London, they can be a real lifesaver!

Indigo

Indigo was one of the first places I heard about before moving to London because, seriously, how many 100% GF restaurants are there?! And its accredited by Coeliac UK. Executive Chef Dominic Teague created a menu that is gluten and dairy free with the most mouth-watering selection from breakfast to dinner. Highlights include traditional Fish & Chips, Oarkney Scallops, the most decadent Valrhona Chocolate Mousse and homemade bread. Yes, you read that right. Homemade. Bread. I’m ashamed to say I took one home, forgot about it, ate it the next day and was amazed at how incredibly soft it still was. Can we start a petition for Chef Teague to open a bakery?

Dishoom

Dishoom is a dream come true. With an extensive GF menu and many dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options, the restaurant offers Indian cuisine honoring the old Irani cafés of Bombay. Oh, and did I mention their gluten-free menu includes breakfast? Because who wouldn’t want to start their day with a “Big Bombay.” Must try dishes: Chicken Ruby, Chole-Chawal, Mahi Tikka, House Black Daal, Mango Lassi and Malai Kulfi.

FLAT IRON STEAK

Sometimes you just feel like a perfectly seared steak with triple fried fries (!!) and for those moments, nowhere beats Flat Iron Steak. With a limited menu, the food is simple, delicious and crafted with British seasonal produce. Though they have five locations throughout London, the restaurants are always bustling, and they don’t take reservations. Waiting times during peak hours can be up to one hour and a half, so it’s always best to put your name down, go for a walk and wait for their text message to tell you your table is ready. Trust me. It’s worth the wait!

Locanda Locatelli

Looking for that special somewhere that serves elevated Italian food? Michelin starred Chef Giorgio Locatelli’s daughter is allergic to over 600 things, ensuring the restaurant is extremely careful with allergens. The menu is an homage to the many regions of Italy and designed to be enjoyed by everyone. Most dishes, including pasta and desserts, are or can be made gluten-free. The best part? We were welcomed with a selection of gluten-free bread on arrival and petit fours with homemade marshmallows at the end of the meal. For a truly memorable Italian culinary experience at lunch or dinner, Locanda Locatelli is our home away from home. Our faves: Sicilian Red Prawns & Courgette Risotto, Tagliatelle with Kid Goat Ragù and Fillet of John Dory with Potatoes and Olives.

Shoryu Ramen

Asian restaurants can be the most difficult to find, so I consider myself lucky to have a few places I trust in London. My absolute favourite in terms of choice is Shoryu Ramen, a chain of 10 Japanese restaurants throughout central London originating from Chuo-ku, Japan. They are also present in Oxford and Manchester. Their most popular dish, the Chicken Karaage Bun, is a parcel of fried goodness (from a dedicated fryer!) and so far the only celiac safe buns we’ve found.

I researched the GF options beforehand but was scared of cross-contamination; however, the staff ensured me that the majority of their menu was naturally gluten-free. The few items that are not are prepared separately, making it a safe haven for celiacs in search of authentic Mexican tacos. My personal recommendation? Tacos el Pastór featuring 24hr marinated pork shoulder, caramelized pineapple, guacamole taquero, white onion, and coriander.

Buongiorno e Buonasera

Though there are several celiac-friendly pizza options in London, the newly opened Buongiorno e Buonasera is what we consider to be the closest to traditional Neapolitan pizza. The restaurant boasts separate preparation spaces, a designated oven and many naturally GF toppings. Our personal favourite is with Burrata; mozzarella’s creamier and sweeter cousin. They also stock Italian gluten-free products including dry pasta, tomato sauce, bottled juices, and cookies.
