Seeds Bistro, Washington

by Kimberley Pearson

Seeds Bistro, found in the charming little historic town of LaConner, WA., is located on a delta near the mouth of the Skagit River. LaConner is surrounded by protected farmland, with the waterway and the Cascade mountains as a backdrop. Seeds Bistro sources their ingredients locally from the lush and vibrant Skagit Valley farms that surround La Conner. Because of these earthly contributions, Seeds is a real “farm to table” experience.

Seeds Bistro gets much of its warm character from the historical and refurbished, 1870’s Tillinghast Seed Company building, which is now the restaurant's home. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, including cozy, intimate booths and tables. The walls feature photos, which provide glimpses into the areas agricultural and forestry roots. The restaurant’s rustic decor makes it both warm and inviting.

Lunch and dinner, along with happy hour specials offer diverse gluten-free (GF) options. In fact, a majority of the menu (19 items total including the dessert menu), either gluten-free or easy substitutions (i.e., switching out the bread) are taken to make it gluten-free. Our server was very respectful, accommodating and knowledgeable, not only about the GF menu options but also what menu items might pose a risk for cross-contamination. While they don’t have a designated area set aside for gluten-free prep, our server Lexi said gluten-free preparation is taken seriously. Servers inform the kitchen on specific orders requiring cautionary attention because of celiac disease and other food allergies. The kitchen staff performs extra measures to avoid cross-contamination.

Now on to the most important part -the food! I have eaten at Seeds many times over the past three years or so, and it is consistently excellent. Per the server’s recommendations on gluten-free menu items, I went for the pulled hog tacos. The smoky chipotle flavors gently permeated the tacos and complemented the brightness of the garlic lime aioli and creamy coleslaw. The pulled hog was perfect and achieved pure pork sumptuousness.  As for any reactions to the food, I will say that the Barnyard burger caused a mild reaction possibly due to the breading on the chicken. Seeds prices are very reflective of costs of dining out in greater Seattle area, so in light of that prices are moderate. However, I will say that for 15.50  two tacos was a bit skimpy. Everything else I’ve had at Seeds has been excellent, price and portion wise.

If you’re looking for a memorable gluten-free food experience featuring both seasonal, local ingredients of high quality, that also provides you a taste of the Pacific Northwest from start to finish, then Seeds is the place to go.
