The Top 7 MUST visit Gluten-free Bakeries in Europe!

by Sarah Bence

Being gluten-free has its challenges, and traveling gluten-free may be one of the biggest challenges. However, when I moved abroad to the UK four years ago, I took it upon myself to make traveling gluten-free my mission! Instead of letting fear of being glutened drive me to live off energy bars and GF oatmeal packets on my trips, I did my research. Subsequently, I have now been to 26 countries and found gluten-free gems in each! Below I am sharing the best of the best:

My List of the Best Gluten-free Restaurants and Bakeries in Europe

Svejk U Karla

This traditional Czech restaurant is worth going back to again and again. Here you can get safely prepared traditional Czech dishes served gluten-free. I recommend the schnitzel and apple strudel, but why not try it all? I’m pretty sure I did!

Křemencova 186/7, 110 00 Nové Město, Czechia, Prague

Celiac Ruz

This bakery and café in Valencia is 100% gluten-free and always safe for celiacs. With tons of baked goods made daily, they serve the best gluten-free croissants I have ever tried (and I have done a lot of “research”!). I ate here every morning on my trip to Valencia and I would even recommend looking for a hotel or Airbnb close to the area so you can walk here for breakfast.

C/ Cuba, 54, 46006 Valencia, Spain

Zum Wohl

Zum Wohl in Vienna is a 100% gluten and lactose-free restaurant that even your gluten-loving companions will love! Here you can enjoy traditional Viennese dishes served gluten-free, such as the schnitzel, goulash, sacher torte, and even gluten-free Austrian beers.

Stumpergasse 61, 1060 Vienna, Austria

Starbene Gold

Starbene Gold in Florence is truly the gold standard for gluten-free bakeries, and dare I say it is one of the best in the whole world? This 100% gluten-free bakery is nestled in the heart of Florence and is safe for celiacs. You’ll be overwhelmed with options here, whether you’re looking for a gluten-free pastry, donut, cannoli, to-go sandwich or pizza, or even gluten-free cooking supplies.

Via dei Neri, 13/r, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy

Ciro and Sons

Another restaurant in Florence makes the list because this city packs a big punch for gluten-free travelers! At Ciro and Sons you can try homemade gluten-free pizza and pasta – their pizza even won the 1st place prize for World’s Best Gluten Free Pizza…and you can tell.

Via del Giglio 28/r - 50123 Firenze, Italy

Duck & Waffle

Duck & Waffle is an iconic London restaurant that, at 42 stories up, offers one of the best views of London! They are known for their signature gluten-free waffles, and the kitchen has safe cross-contamination practices.

Heron Tower, 110 Bishopsgate, London EC2N 4AY, UK

Drop

When in Budapest, head to Drop, the city’s only 100% gluten-free full-service restaurant. This place is always busy and is a hit with both the gluten-free and gluten-loving alike. Their menu contains more traditional Hungarian dishes such as the schnitzel or goulash, alongside contemporary and trendy dishes. They also have a long selection of gluten-free burgers! I got the Texas Burger which I would recommend if you are goulash-ed out.

Budapest, Hajós u. 27, 1065 Hungary

Thankfully, gluten-free travel has become much easier over the years. Europe, in particular, is very progressive about providing not only gluten-free options but safe preparation as well. There are so many gluten-free restaurants and bakeries in Europe, but the above are my favorites after years of traveling and living in Europe!
